Licensure, Certifications and Other Programs
|
Q: Is the National Personal Training Institute licensed?
A. Yes. We are the only state licensed personal training education and certification
program in the State of Ohio. We are licensed by the State of Ohio Board of Career
Colleges and Schools. (http://scr.ohio.gov).
Q: Will the NPTI-CPT credential allow me to work in states other than Ohio?
A: Yes. It is a nationally recognized certification.
Q. What about on-line certifications?
A: Would you hire a personal trainer who received an on-line certification? Probably not,
and neither would your clients. Most on-line certifications only require you to purchase a
book and take a short test. You must ask yourself how this qualifies and prepares
someone to work as a personal trainer. Would you go to a doctor with only an on-line
certification? Why should it be any different for a personal trainer? The general public
and those in positions to hire personal trainers understand that an on-line certification
does not provide someone with the experience and expertise required to work as a
personal trainer.
Q. Other personal training certifications exist. Wouldn’t the end result be the same if I just
tried to take one of these other certifications as opposed to investing the time to attend the
National Personal Training Institute?
A. The end result will be very different once you graduate from our program and earn our
nationally recognized certification than if you simply tried to receive a personal training
certification from another organization. Other credible personal training certifications exist,
such as those offered by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), the
American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or the National Academy of Sports Medicine
(NASM). These certifications are all respected and in fact many of our students go on to get
one or more of them upon completing our program. We think that is a great idea and we
have a 100% passing rate for our graduates who have gone on to sit for the NCSA-CPT
exam. However, all of these students said they would not have been able to pass that
examination test unless they had completed our program first so you should be aware that
passing those exams is something you might not be able to do without prior instruction.
The primary difference between our program and the other certifications is in the ability to
not only get a job once you are done but to have long-term success as a personal trainer.
You first must ask yourself a simple question. If you were looking to hire a personal trainer,
either as a gym owner or as a client, who would you hire. The person who devoted time
and energy to attending a six month personal training education and certification program
that consisted of both classroom and hands on training or someone who simply opened a
book and tried to pass a certification exam.
You must also ask yourself if you were able to pass a simple certification exam and
somehow get a client, would you be able to prescribe functional training exercises, the
most popular training method in the industry today, using equipment such as the stability
ball, Bosu, medicine balls, dyna-discs, bands or tubing? These items are widely available in
gyms and retail locations so you better be prepared to use them with your clients or they
won't be your clients for long. Would you also know how to prescribe and design an
exercise program for a client who is six-months pregnant, for one who has asthma or type II
diabetes or one who want to improve their running speed and vertical jump? You’ll learn all
this in our program.
There are several other things that make our program the only choice if you want to be
successful as a personal trainer:
• We have an extensive internship program which allows you to get invaluable real
world experience and make important job and hiring contacts.
• We have expansive job placement which includes multiple pages of contact
information of people who hire personal trainers.
• We received calls on a consistent basis from gym owners and people needing
personal trainers that are passed along to our graduates.
• We bring in guest speakers who work in the industry to lecture on a variety of topics.
These are people who can hire you that you would not otherwise meet.
• We’re a national company so we can assist you with job placement across the country.
• Your classmates are valuable contacts. We’ve had students recently open several
personal training studios after they graduated and who do you think they hired. People who
they went through our program with.
Q. What about colleges or junior colleges? Don’t some of these schools offer personal
training programs?
A. A few colleges and junior colleges do offer some type of a personal training program
which we think is great as it goes to show just how strong the profession of personal training
is and how much the industry is growing. When you compare programs; however you will
see that there really isn’t much of a choice.
All we do here at the National Personal Training Institute is educate, certify and prepare our
students for successful careers in the health and fitness industry. This is a focus that other
places don’t have. For instance, in the classroom portion of our curriculum you'll be taught
specifically what you need to know so you won't be wasting your time studying unrelated
topics such as English or History. In the practical component of our program, which you
won't find anywhere else, you'll gain the invaluable hands on experience you need to guide
your clients through their workouts. And when you include our internship program and the
fact that we work hard to help our students find jobs upon graduation, you can see how the
singular focus of our program truly benefits our students. It’s also interesting to note that we
often have people enroll in our program who have already earned an associates or
undergraduate degree in a health and fitness related area because they were not happy
with the education they received nor could they get a job they were satisfied with.
Q. What requirements do I have to meet to earn my certification?
1) Complete all required coursework, tests and assignments.
2) Have a cumulative average of at least 70% on all tests and assignments.
3) Meet the 500 hour attendance requirement.
Q. What if I miss a class?
A. Students must make up missed attedance hours. This can be done by attending a class
that is not in their normal program, (i.e. a student registered for the Monday-Thursday class
can attend a Monday/Wednesday/Saturday class) or by attending a seminar on any health
and fitness related topic.
